DoubleTake

DoubleTake magazine ceased publication in 2004. Launched in 1995, the arts journal was devoted to the written word and to the visual image of a community connected by stories, worries and dreams. Unlike other art or literary journals, DoubleTake celebrated work from emerging writers and artists, quietly presenting narratives of ordinary people. The effect was anything but ordinary; released quarterly, each issue featured unique topics such as a first-year medical students anatomy class, the quest to locate a once-famous jazz musician lost to drugs and poverty, the competitive world of Little League baseball or life inside a correctional facility for women.

Challenging finances and the Internet replacing paper periodicals has put many magazines and newspapers in a vulnerable position for dissolution. DoubleTake explored the world through word and image, always with the intention of revealing the connections that exist between all humankind; serious, playful, curious, critical--it was a forum for storytellers. I'll pass along a paperback book after reading it, I'll recycle old magazines immediately, but I've saved and treasure every issue of DoubleTake.

(You may be able to find back issues on Ebay, and also at Abebooks.)
