826 Valencia is the name and address of a San Francisco non-profit organization that provides one-on-one tutoring, homework assistance and a variety of free writing development programs for students ages 6 to 18. Founded by author Dave Eggers in 2002, the building leased was in a commercial zone and regulations stipulated a commercial storefront. The interior space, with its wood floors and beamed ceiling looked vaguely like those found on a ship, thus the Pirate Supply Shop was conceived. The shop sells flags, peg legs, glass eyes and other pirate accouterments (all proceeds benefit the student programs). In the eight years since 826 Valencia was established, chapters have been generated in NYC, Los Angeles, Michigan, Seattle, Chicago and Boston. Not all have storefronts, although the Los Angeles location (826LA) is in the back of the Time Travel Mart.
