James Castle

Using the most humble materials: stove soot, discarded paper, cardboard and string, James Castle (1899-1977) created imaginative drawings, collages and constructions. His world was especially private and silent, having been born deaf and never learning sign language or how to read or write. Knowing this, his fascination with the alphabet and use of random scraps of text is especially poignant. He expressed himself wholly through his art; his use of color, choice of materials and intuitive design so poetically succinct.
