Counting

Early Saturday morning, B. and I watched David Lory unpack new inventory of his hand turned wood bowls. The cherry, walnut, elm and birch woods had unique patterns and lines, especially in the case of burl. But one lighter bowl caught my eye; there was a distinguishable number '8' within the swirling grain. I love numbers. I love their purity, their simplicity and their absolute value. When they appear in paintings, maps, road signs, doorways, scoreboards or even in a wood bowl, they have a playful yet calming effect.

The vibrant collages are by Joan Miro.
