When in Rome

Spartacus, Stanley Kubrick 1960

Roman Holiday, William Wyler 1953

La Dolce Vita, Federico Fellini 1960

Romeo and Juliet, Franco Zeffirelli 1968

Rome, lush and majestic in film.

I only know this because John and I looked it up after we watched Romeo and Juliet: it was all filmed in various small towns a fair distance outside of Rome -- both the exterior and interior shots.

I didn't know that! I do know that Spartacus was actually shot in Spain and the bombastic Cleopatra (1963) was shot in part on location in Rome, even though it resembles a backlot.
