The Photographer

The Photographer is a music-drama in three acts, created in 1982 by composer Philip Glass. The performance is based on events in the life of photographer Eadweard Muybridge.

In 1872, Leland Stanford, the wealthy industrialist, founder of Stanford University and racehorse owner, commissioned Muybridge to photograph horses in motion.

In 1875, after a sensational trial, Muybridge was acquitted for murdering his young wife's lover, whom he suspected was the true father of his infant son. It was Stanford who paid for Muybridge's defense. After his acquittal, Muybridge resumed his work for Stanford, creating the infamous footage of the horse Occident, seen running in the attached video.
