To supplement her income as a French teacher, Edith Head applied for a job as a sketch artist at the Famous Players Lasky Studios (later Paramount Studios). She had earned an MA in Romance Languages at Stanford University but had no art or design experience or training. With a portfolio comprised of sketches borrowed from art students, she was hired for the position, and remained with the studio for more than forty years. During her lengthy and amazing career, she received over thirty Academy Award nominations for Costume Design, winning eight Oscars for her work.
