Life and Death

British bomber pilot Peter Carter's plane is heavily damaged, struggling in dense fog, his crew has bailed safely but his own parachute is in shreds. Resolute that he'd rather jump than crash and burn, he makes one last radio dispatch. He connects with a young American woman, June, working for the United States Army Air Force and the two share a poignant, tender conversation. He jumps, she weeps, yet this is only the beginning. Peter wakes in the surf near June's station and the two quickly find love. Death, delayed in finding him in the fog is irate that Peter will not come along quietly. Heaven agrees to a trial to determine whether Peter deserves an extended life.

A Matter of Life and Death (aka A Stairway to Heaven), widely considered by critics as one of the greatest British films ever made.
