Brilliant white

Fumée d’Ambre Gris, 1880
Oil on canvas
John Singer Sargent

From the Clark Art Institute, Williamstown MA

A woman dressed in a white robe inhales the smoke of ambergris. The light reflects from her silver necklace, the incense pot and the plaster walls behind her. There are subtle shades of white throughout the painting, infused with violet, yellow, and orange. Amazing.
