Honest Abe

The trailer for the new Steven Spielberg film, Lincoln, shows a very convincing Daniel Day-Lewis playing our 16th president. Generally, I get distracted by heavy make-up used to alter an actor's face to resemble someone in particular. With an iconic figure like Abraham Lincoln, the requisite stovepipe hat, bow tie and beard seem enough to convey his image. But the prosthetic nose inevitably makes an appearance. The effort to recreate an exact image is especially puzzling, considering how little is extended to other characters.  Sally Field, slim, attractive and 65 years old, portrays Abraham Lincoln's wife Mary, who was plump, plain and 47 years old at the time of his assassination.
