Annie Edson Taylor, a retired school teacher from Michigan, was the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. She strapped herself into a modified pickle barrel with a few pillows and her cat and went over the Horseshoe Falls. She survived the plunge with a small cut and minor concussion. The daredevil event took place on her 63rd birthday.
