Rascal House

Rascal House desserts

Wayne Thiebaud- Pies

Wolfie Cohen's Rascal House closed permanently in March 2008. When we visited Miami to see his grandmother, M. and I stood in line outside the restaurant with a large crowd, many of whom were senior citizens. I should have known from seeing several teeter precariously on their walkers, that this place was worth the wait. What followed was a parade of deli happiness: pastrami sandwiches, pickled tomatoes, matzo brei and blintzes! Sadly, after a beloved 50 year stint, Rascal House is the stuff of memories.

The amazing thing is that places like that LAST for 50 years. It takes a devoted owner working 7 days a week, 12 hours a day to keep the quality of a restaurant (or deli) high. Even if you last your whole career at that pace, unless you have a child who takes an interest in the family business, it will exist only for a generation.

I was surprised to read that the Walnut Room, the stately restaurant within Marshall Field's State Street store in Chicago is still open, still serving piping hot pot pies, despite Marshall Field's being bought out by Macy's!
